Amputation Rehabilitation
The loss of a limb is usually the result of a traumatic injury, infection or disease processes, such as diabetes, arteriosclerosis or other condition that impairs blood circulation. At the Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida at Memorial Regional Hospital South, we provide comprehensive management and rehabilitation skills to assist patients in recovering from limb amputation.
Whether you have become an amputee after an accident or due to disease or congenital illness, your amputation rehabilitation team provides the physical, emotional and social support to help you reach your personal goals.
Depending on your physical needs, your care may include:
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Speech therapy
- Recreational therapy
- Neuropsychology
- Dietary
- Pharmacy
- Animal-assisted therapy
Depending on your individual needs, you may receive exercise therapy to help recondition and strengthen muscles to support increased mobility and flexibility so you can lead a more active, independent lifestyle. Your amputation rehabilitation treatment may include desensitization exercises to decrease hypersensitivity that can result from amputation or treatment for phantom pain, a painful sensation that can occur in a limb following amputation.
In addition, we offer an innovative way to practice life skills. Our Determination Drive is a realistic, simulated community environment that includes a fully functioning apartment, a car, library and grocery store utilized to assist you in returning home.
At the Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida, we recognize that families and their caregivers are important members of the rehabilitation team. We offer a patient- and family-centered care approach that allows 24-hour visitation with bedside accommodations for overnight stays if desired. We also encourage families to attend weekly conferences with their loved one to discuss progress and plans for discharge directly with their personalized team of caregivers. Family members are welcome to participate in your daily therapy sessions. We also provide an evaluation of your home by our therapy team if needed prior to discharge.
As part of our focus on providing patient-and family-centered care, we offer a support group for amputees and their families. Call 954-518-5546 for more information.
